Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM)

The Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM) was a landmark $932 million infrastructure project aimed at significantly improving traffic flow and connectivity along a critical section of Queensland’s highway network.

The project involved major upgrades to both the Sunshine Motorway and Caloundra Road interchanges, the expansion of the Bruce Highway to six lanes between these interchanges, and the construction of a fully connected service road on the western side of the highway. Notably, it included the delivery of Australia’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), enhancing safety and efficiency.

Key project components included:

  • Construction of 21 bridges (12 over waterways) and 2 underpasses, supported by 5,108 linear metres of cast-in-place bored piles

  • 15 km of local roads widened, upgraded, or newly constructed

  • 8 km of new multi-lane smart motorway

  • 9 km of active transport infrastructure

  • Extensive water and sewer relocations using traditional and trenchless methods, including a 900 m long, 900 mm diameter horizontal directional drill (HDD) that avoided clearing old-growth forest

  • 142,000 m³ of asphalt pavement

  • 100 hectares of landscaping and revegetation, including 5 fauna crossings

Complex Consulting Group supported the project during its finalisation phase, acting as Contract Administrator and contributing to the successful closeout of this complex and large-scale infrastructure development.
