Bruce Highway Upgrade – Smart Motorways Stage 2 (SMS2)

The Bruce Highway – Pine River to Caloundra Road Smart Motorways (Stage 2) project was a $105 million initiative aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and reliability along a 60 km stretch of the Bruce Highway through the implementation of advanced Smart Motorways technology.

The project delivered a suite of intelligent transport systems designed to optimise traffic flow and proactively manage congestion and incidents. Key features included:

  • Ramp signals at highway entry points to regulate traffic merging onto the highway

  • Variable speed limit signs to respond dynamically to traffic conditions and improve incident management

  • Variable message signs to provide real-time updates and alerts to motorists

  • Vehicle detection systems enabling the operation of Smart Motorways infrastructure through continuous data capture

  • CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring and traffic management

Complex Consulting Group was engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to provide Project Management services during the construction and finalisation phases of the SMS2 project, ensuring the successful delivery of this important transport technology upgrade.
